If you live in a hot climate, you know how difficult the long summer months can be on an AC unit. When the AC goes out unexpectedly, it can bring your family’s life to a sweaty halt. To prevent AC malfunctions, it is good to know some of the warning signs that your system is struggling. Here we will look at a few early warning signs of air conditioner trouble.

Air Flow Is Weak and/or Warm

This is usually one of the first and most obvious signs that something is wrong with your system and that you may be in need of air conditioning repair or maintenance. The first thing you should do if you notice this is to check your air filters. Dirty air filters can have a huge impact on a system. If it has been a while since you changed out the air filters, start with this. Watch your system for the next few hours and see if the problem improves. If it does not, you should call in a professional to check out your system.

Odd Noises

Another sign of AC trouble can be odd noises coming from your system. A squealing system can sometimes indicate a blower or compressor fan in need of lubrication. A clicking sound can mean an electrical problem. Loud banging or clanking is often an indication that something has gone wrong with a blower assembly. Grinding noises could be a failed compressor, which is a serious system malfunction. Contacting a professional HVAC technician when your system is making strange noises is always best.

Moisture or Leaks

AC systems will create moisture as condensation which is formed on the condenser coil. A well-installed AC unit will have a drainage system to deal with this moisture. If moisture is collecting in the system or around the system, there could be problems with the drainage system. Most likely the tubes that take away the liquid are blocked somehow. This can also sometimes be a sign of low refrigerant. Either way, you should have a professional check out the issue. Moisture collection can cause water damage to your home if left unchecked.

Odors

A well-working AC unit will usually not produce any sort of odors. If you notice a pungent smell, it could mean that there is damage to the insulation around the unit or to the wiring. Smells that remind you of engine exhaust could be a fluid leak. The smell of dirty feet could mean that moisture has collected and led to the development of fungus somewhere.

Unusually High Electric Bills

If you notice a sudden hike in your power bill, it could mean that your AC system is working too hard. When the AC is not working efficiently, you will use more electricity and your bills will be higher. This could simply mean that your system needs a tune-up, but it could also mean there is something wrong. A professional HVAC tech can help you keep your system running efficiently.
